Have you gotten a call claiming to be from Google asking you to “verify your business listing”?
Maybe it said your listing would be removed from search results. Maybe it asked you to press 1 to speak with someone.
These calls are scams.
They are not from Google. They’re from bad actors trying to trick you into paying for free services—or worse, stealing your data.
How the Scam Works
1. Google Doesn’t Call to Verify Listings
Google never cold-calls business owners. Real verification methods include:
- Signing into google.com/business
- Receiving a postcard with a unique code
- Starting a support request for video verification
If you didn’t initiate it, it’s not Google.
2. Robotic Voices or Automated Messages
Scammers use robocalls to impersonate Google. They sound official. They’re not.
3. Urgent Threats
They’ll claim your listing will be taken down unless you act now. This is designed to scare you.
4. Requests for Private Information
They may ask for:
- Credit card or banking info
- Google account login
- Personal details
- Never give out sensitive data over the phone.
What To Do If You Get One of These Calls
- Hang up immediately.
Do not press any buttons. Do not speak to a “representative.”
- Report the scam.
File a report with:
Go to google.com/business and log into your dashboard.
- Do not share information.
Unless you called Google yourself through official channels, don’t share any info.
- Pause before acting.
Urgency is a red flag. Take a minute to think.
How Google Really Verifies Listings
Google offers several safe ways to verify and manage your listing:
Business Profile Dashboard
Log in to manage your info, respond to reviews, and confirm ownership.
Postcard Verification
Google will mail a code to your business address. Enter it online.
Video Verification (only if you request it)
Google may schedule a live video call where you show your storefront or documents.
For iQComms Users: How To Block Spam Calls
You can stop scam calls or texts from a specific number in your iQComms account.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Search for the Contact
- Go to Contacts
- Use the search bar to find the number or name
2. Open the Contact Profile
- Click the name to view details
3. Turn on DND (Do Not Disturb)
- Scroll to DND Settings
- Toggle ON for “DND Inbound Calls and SMS”
This blocks calls, texts, notifications, and automations from that number.
(Optional) Add a Note
- In the profile, leave a note like:
“Marked as spam on 6/27/25 – unsolicited calls/texts”
Don’t Fall for It
If someone calls saying they’re Google, think twice.
Real support happens through your dashboard—not surprise phone calls.
